Key scientist sure “God particle” will be found soon

Wednesday 9 April 2008 @ 1:09 pm

Higgs said he believes a particle named the “Higgs boson”, which originates from the force, will be found when a vast particle collider at the CERN research centre on the Franco-Swiss border begins operating fully early next year.

Boys Will Be Boys, Even Among Monkeys

Tuesday 8 April 2008 @ 12:46 pm

April 7, 2008 — The notion that children’s taste in toys might somehow be genetically determined has long been disparaged by psychologists — pooh-poohed as unscientific, sexist or both.

Hadron collider set to find the elusive Higgs Boson

Tuesday 1 April 2008 @ 1:56 pm

When the collider is turned on next spring, the teams behind ATLAS and CMS will be racing each other to find evidence of long-predicted but still-unseen subatomic particles, such as the Higgs boson (thought to give rise to mass itself) and supersymmetric particles (which may contribute to our universe’s mysterious dark matter). If one detector finds a new twist in physics, the other will serve as a reality check.

Huge Iceberg Breaks Away, Antarctic Ice Shelf ‘Hangs By A Thread’

Tuesday 25 March 2008 @ 2:11 pm

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2008) — British Antarctic Survey has captured dramatic satellite images of an Antarctic ice shelf that looks set to be the latest to break out from the Antarctic Peninsula. A large part of the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula is now supported only by a thin strip of ice hanging between two islands. It is another identifiable impact of climate change on the Antarctic environment.

Oldest-Known Asteroids in Solar System Identified

Monday 24 March 2008 @ 10:16 pm

“We have identified asteroids that are not represented in our meteorite collection and which date from the earliest periods of the solar system,” Sunshine said. “These asteroids are prime candidates for future space missions that could collect and return samples to Earth providing a more detailed understanding of the Solar System’s first few millions of years.”

Light from supernova explosion reaches Earth after traveling 7.5 billion years

Saturday 22 March 2008 @ 2:39 pm

At 7.5 billion light years away, this event far eclipses the previous naked eye record of 2.5 million light years. One light year is 5.9 trillion miles.

Giant sea creatures found in Antarctic search

Friday 21 March 2008 @ 3:22 pm

Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand’s Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish.

Intelligent design politics, not science, professor says

Saturday 8 March 2008 @ 2:12 pm

A movement which claims to be an alternative to the scientific theory of evolution is nothing than an attempt to inject politics and religion into the classroom, a University of Oklahoma professor said Friday.

Is funding of science research programs not self-evidently political?

This professor Hutchinson spoke at a regional Democratic Party meeting in Oklahoma, and told them that ID was part of the “ongoing culture war” in America.

“Evolution is not a faith and intelligent design is not a scientific theory,” Hutchinson told the audience at the weekly Democratic Party luncheon. “Science can only ask ‘how,’ science cannot ask ‘why?’ “

But of course, in truth, science — and Darwinism in particular — *loves* to tell us why: From vacuum genesis to punctuated equilibrium, Darwinism always assumes a root mechanical cause for all events (no matter how unlikely any event may be).

In other words, many orthodox scientists will, when cornered, insist that the universe and everything in exists not from any conscious or intelligent decision, but because Chaos Causes Everything.

” - it is calculated that 250,000 babies who would have been boys have been born girls in the U.S. and Japan alone.”

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age

Monday 25 February 2008 @ 3:31 pm

Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.
